April 2024 Book Lover's Challenge - WINNERS!!!

Post by rachel0017 »

Thank you to everyone who participated this month. I definitely cringed a bit over the stories of your mishaps, and truly loved reading the stories behind your heirlooms. The winners are as follows:

$5 gift card: #8 - SandyK1967
Auto-entry for May: #10 - GerriW

It is the 1700s and the British have occupied the Gold Coast of Africa. James Collins, the British general, takes Effia the Beauty as his wife and brings her to live in the Cape Coast Castle with the rest of the British guard. Unbeknownst to Effia, her half-sister, Esi, has been captured and is being kept in the dungeons just below her feet. Thus begins a sweeping epic following the two half-sisters, and their descendants, through 300 years of history.

Esi is put on a ship and sold into slavery in America, where her descendants come to know only pain, hardship, and discrimination. From plantations in the south to freedom in Baltimore, back down to the coal mines of Alabama, and up to the jazz clubs in Harlem, Esi’s storyline lays bare the worst parts of America’s history.

Meanwhile, Effia remains in Africa and her descendants learn discrimination of another kind, as their lineage is entwined with that of the white man. Her lineage will see traditions and rituals, proud Asante warriors, and those who want nothing to do with the war and will defect and forever be cast out from their villages.

Ultimately, members of both families will come to understand one fundamental truth: our past, however distant, leaves an indelible mark on who we are and who we will become.

OPTION 1: TAKE THE BAD WITH THE GOOD
If you’ve been with me for a while, you’ll know that I am a huge proponent of scrapping both the good and the bad. In both Esi and Effia’s stories, there is plenty of bad, including a history of slavery on Esi’s side, and one of Effia’s descendants who is badly disfigured in a terrible accident as a baby. So, for this first option, scrap a not-so-happy moment. It can be an illness, a loss, or just a normal day where nothing went right. Just be sure to tell the story of the negative experience.

OPTION 2: FAMILY HEIRLOOMS
Esi and Effia’s mother provides them each with a black stone as a remembrance of her and these stones end up being passed down through the generations, surviving three centuries. For Option 2, make a page about an heirloom that is special to you or your family and be sure to tell the story of its history.

I created this layout for option 1:

It’s about when I got covid, after avoiding it for over 2 years.

I hope this qualifies?

This sounds like a fascinating book which I’ve got to check out. I love both options.

Option one: We were excited for this outdoor concert, but it turned out to be rainy and cold and a miserable evening.

Hi Rachel - Can I submit a single page TN for this or does it need to be a larger format? Thanks!

I did option 2 and one of my most cherished heirlooms is the large picture of my grandparents wedding. We had no idea this picture even existed as my mom had it in her hope chest hidden away. My son was going through the chest after she passed away and found it on the bottom. I could not believe it, my grandmother looks amazing! I loved her veil and to pay homeage to that I place lace around the journaling. It is something I will love and cherish forever.
Journaling reads:
After my mom passed away, Jeffrey found the beautiful framed wedding picture of my grandparents, George and Sophie Tinus. Uncle Richard told me they got married twice, the second time in the church, circa 1930's. No one knew about the picture, and I am proud to display it in my home.

I went with Option 2 Family Heirloom. This statue was given to my Grandma when she was a baby. It is the Infant of Prague. It stood at the end of her upstairs hallway in the recessed space in the wall made for it for as long as I could remember (as seen in the photo) probably since before I was born. I eventually bought the house from her and there it stayed till we moved. I now have the statue.

Option 1 again for me

My children and husband participated in this Spartan race. It was a disappointment for my husband because he wasn’t able to finish the race. The whole story is in the journaling.
