Yup. I have to assume the risk would be known. Therefor the release of the drug would simply present an *option* that was not there before. Those wanting a cure could choose to take it and have that 1% risk... or not.

ETA: Now if you want to know if *I* would take it? No stinkin' way. I have horrible luck and would totally be that 1%.

No, I would not. EVery drug has a risk vs benefit... even Tylenol. As safe as we think it is, to a certain population, primarily those with liver issues, it can be very dangerous. And believe it or not, a Tylenol overdose can even be fatal. If the guaranteed 1% fatality was for a drug that treated something life threatening, I would say go for it. But as painful and debilitation as arthritis can be (and sorry for asking nurse like questions here... also depends on what type of arthritis you are treating.... rheumatoid arthritis is far different than osteoarthritis), that is too high of a fatality rate for something that is a lifestyle illness. I would want more research and refinement of the drug.

This is exactly how I feel - I say no for arthritis, but I might say yes if it were Cancer or AIDS.

I had a dear friend who suffered for years from severe arthritis and the pain became so horrible with no relief in site that he couldn't handle it any longer and took his life. If a drug to cure arthritis were available, I know without a doubt he would have taken it and would probably still be alive today. I don't have arthritis and have never experienced that type of pain, but I wouldn't want to deny someone else the opportunity for a cure if they were in severe pain. There are risk that comes with all medications and also with having surgery, but I wouldn't turn down having surgery that would make my quality of life better even with a 1% risk.

Yes because 1% is a small percentage when you look at the number of people that are suffering from this condition. It's a chance I think I would take.

If you think about it, drugs that "cure" diseases generally have a 1% death rate anyway - or that chance. We just don't pay attention to it. As one suffers from degenerative arthritis but who currently is managing it... someday I would take a drug like this, side effects be damned.
