Aunt Julia update
Aunt Julia has been moved to a rehab facililty on Staten Island.

She wasn't too thrilled with this but is accepting. My cousin, Diana (in picture with Aunt Julia) visits every day on her way home from work. Aunt Marie and Uncle Tom visit a couple times a week.

They had a meeting with the team that is taking care of Aunt Julia. She needs a total hip replacement on the hip that had surgery when she was a child. They need to do this before the surgery for the brain tumor.

However, there is concern that she would not be able to tolerate the pain after the surgery and the physical therapy that would be needed. Keep in mind that she is very childlike in her understanding of things. She doesn't grasp that sometimes you need to work through the pain to get better.

She is also stubborn as can be. (She was taken down to the Rec room to participate in some games and she told the aid she wasn't going to play any (&#$(&# games!) So, if she doesn't want to do the PT (especially if it hurts!) it's not about to happen.

She also has osteoperosis.

The family has to decide if, at 71 years old, if it's worth putting her through the trauma of the surgery, the pain of recovery for the hip replacement, the physical therapy and all before they can do the surgery for the brain tumor.

The neurosurgeon said she has to be physically able to do the rehab before the brain tumor can be taken out.

It's a tough decision.

Here is a picture of Aunt Julia that I took when we went down at Easter. She is making little piggy purses. She loves to sew stuff.

Oh gosh Gloria, this has to be very difficult on all the family to figure out what is best for your Aunt. I pray they are able to know what is best. Hugs to you and Aunt Julia.

Re: Aunt Julia update
Hi Gloria,
I think of you and Aunt Julia all the time. You are faced with some tough decisions as you well know. My nephew has cerebral palsy- he is 41 years old. He had to have surgery twice and it is a fight and a hassle to get him to cooperate. He is mentally retarded and functions at about the age of a 9 year old. He understands what the doctors and family tells him for a little while and then he fights it. You have a lot on your shoulders. I will pray that Aunt Julia will be able to cooperate at times so that she may procede to get the treatments she greatly needs.

My love and prayers,

Carol
Enjoy for we will never have this day again.

Seems like Aunt Julia is a little feisty, which is definitely a good thing. I'm sure you and your family will make the best decision for her. She is very lucky to have you all and is cute as can be. Prayers for her and your family.

Re: Aunt Julia update
My mother had to have the hip replacement surgery in October 2006 after she broke her hip. She wound up wheelchair bound afterwards. She was willing to do the therapy. Her Alzheimer's complicated her recovery. She had trouble remembering instructions. But, also complicating her recovery was a quack doctor who kept her over medicated on high blood pressure medicine, plus the facility she wound up in was a hell hole!

It really isn't clear from your post what the doctors think Aunt Julia will gain from the hip replacement surgery. Mobility? Less pain? It looks like she's already wheelchair bound in the picture. My mother is complaining more and more about pain now. I'm not understanding what the gain for Aunt Julia will be or why the hip replacement surgery needs to be done before the brain tumor or why it is important enough to delay that surgery.

She is a lovely woman and it's wonderful that she has an interest in sewing. I know any decison of this nature is so hard on everyone involved. You want to do what is best for your loved one, but sometimes we just don't know what is best. I know, I've been in that position before. I will pray that God will provide the right answers so the family can do what will be in her best interest and give the family peace at whatever decision they come to.

Re: Aunt Julia update
She is in a lot of pain from the hip problem.

The neurosurgeon wants her to be able to stand after taking out the brain tumor. (I have no idea why this is important)

She can't stand because of the hip problem.

I'm hoping to find out more today.
