Just checking in on my new printer, I bought the ET-2850 Epson. Not a large one but handles my needs. Prints amazing quality photos. It takes the basic 8.5 x 11 and any size under that - I've used 5x7 and 4x6 paper. As for price of the refills, a pack is 49 at Sam's Club and 55 at Amazon. I was paying in the 30 range for one cartridge for my old HP. Also, these Epson inks are likely to last longer. Also, I can scan and I print remotely or from desktop. There are probably other things, but this is all I need for now. 
And, my DD's little Cannon Selphy is still doing a marvelous job with what it does.

I ended up sending my niece a digital frame from nixplay.com—it lets me upload photos remotely, and she loves seeing new ones pop up. She’s terrible at printing pictures, so this way her frame always has current shots of the family without her lifting a finger.
