You guys may all already know all about this, I just saw it this morning. It comes to Micheal's on October 4, can be pre-ordered now. I'm sure it can be pre-ordered many other places as well. It's the Cricut Gypsy- the thing they were hinting at on their website. I just watched the little tutorial on it, pretty cool. A small, hand held device that can ALL of your Cricut cartridges. What I liked the most is that letters can welded into one-piece phrases- I prefer that to a bunch of single letters you have to put adhesive on and get stuck on the page neatly etc. You can see more about it at provocraft.com/gypsy
I started watching the demo yesterday, but got interrupted. I'm a little disappointed, since I already have the Design Studio on my computer. I realize that this is meant to be portable, so I'm probably going to wait to see IRL before I jump. Also, I bought DS out the gate when it was pricey, and I notice that it is starting to come down now. Hopefully, same thing will happen with Gypsy.

I saw the video, too. It does look neat, but I don't think I need portability. But some will love it!

If I was the kind of person that took their cricuit and all of it's booty to a crop every week it would be awesome! As it stands though, while it is a cool idea it's not worth the price tag for how much I would use it which would be once every few years I moved. For that money I will just bring an extra box in the van lol

I think the thing that seems cool is that you could borrow carts and load them into this without having to buy them yourself. Can't you see going to a crop and everyone sharing??

I heard that in order to stop this, after you load the cartridge onto your Gypsy, it erases the cartridge. I think it was a direct quote from Provocraft where I read the info. Someone else asked the same thing about the cartridges and cartridge sharing.
I don't need portibility. I don't have the design studio so I might look at that aspect of it.

Yes I can't imagine them letting it eat into their profits like that, there is no way they wouldn't protect themselves. I also see problems, like would you be able to back up your carts on line incase the gypsy was lost/stolen/damaged? Because I have only had my expression since Christmas but I easily have over $1000 in carts. So if they gypsy is gone that is a lot of money down the drain!

Thanks for the imfo.

I was excited about it until I was told that once you add your carts to it they are "empty." What happens if the thing goes bad??????
hmmm...I thought the video said they would still work on your cricut without the gypsy

The video did clearly say that even once you load them (cartridges) on the Gypsy, they will still work on your Cricut, I do not think they become "empty".
It sounds neat, but I don't think I will get it.

I think I read in their FAQ that the serial number of your gypsy is encoded onto your cartridge so that your Gypsy and cartridges are linked. The cartridges will continue to work on any Cricut machine, however they can't be loaded onto another Gypsy machine after it's been linked with yours. In the event of it (the Gypsy) being lost or stolen, Cricut replaces it (at a potential cost) with another Gypsy with the same exact serial number as the original so that your cartridges will still work with it.

I actually think this would be easier and more fun to use than the Design Studio. I could actually sit in my recliner and design something while watching HGTV. LOL I would like to see it IRL and have an opportunity to play with it before taking the plunge. TFS

Thanks for that info- I didn't read the FAQ. That makes sense. They would lose a ton of money if the cartridges could be downloaded onto the Gypsy and then onto other Gypsys.justmeplus3 wrote:I think I read in their FAQ that the serial number of your gypsy is encoded onto your cartridge so that your Gypsy and cartridges are linked. thought - what do you do with the jukeboxes that you have after putting your carts into the gypsy? I have 4 & that is a lot of money to just not use now.
That was my thought.terri04 wrote:thought - what do you do with the jukeboxes that you have after putting your carts into the gypsy? I have 4 & that is a lot of money to just not use now.

Each cartridge can only be loaded once on a gypsy. If the person (like me) is never going to get a gypsy...it's great. But once it goes on a gypsy, it can't be put on another one.
So - it looks like you may have to find out whether a cart has been downloaded to a Gypsy when buying used carts....

I think that this would be good for people who don't like to work with computers too much. Like someone said, they can sit on their couch and make titles that they can weld together. Also, this might be Provocraft's solution for the people who have Macs, like me. I've been emailing them since the beginning of time to come out with a Mac version of their DS and now they can say that they have the perfect solution for me.
I will have to watch the tutorial though, to find out if it is really worth it. If I get the 3rd party version of DS for Mac, then I can use fonts off the internet, and not have to buy font cartridges. So what would the advantage be to me to get it??
