Because the hot dog buns rip and the hot dog falls out, so you have to have extras so you can enjoy the hot dog to the fullest extent!

Or my other belief is, that if you have a dog you have to give the dog 2 of the hot dogs and then the 8 is left for the 4 other members of the family to enjoy on buns!!!
