Wow! What a great response there at the end! Had over a dozen PMs waiting for me when I arrived home and while everyone did a fabulous job (you're all certified "pirates" now :P) the one who eventually got ALL the words correct was.... *drum roll please........ *
ALLYSONC! Woohoo! Congrats for being incredibly diligent in your research (I think I learned a few things too..!) and for winning the $5 GC!!
For those wanting the answers:
Polywog ~ (someone who hasn't gone across the equator yet. Once they do, they become a "shellback")
Son of a gunner's mate ~ referring to the illegitimacy of a child born to a "wife" of a sailor. During the early sailing days, sailors were allowed to have them onboard ship.
Booty ~ Treasure
Lollygagging ~ Messing around, goofing off, etc.
Scuttlebutt ~ Gossiping around the watering hole, which was actually the butt end of a casket.
Cat o' nine tails ~ a whip used for flogging, had nine braided cords attached to the handle
Blue Monday ~ the day for punishment were men were literally beaten/flogged until they were black and blue.
Keel hauling ~ tying the offender to a rope, tossing him overboard and pulling him under the ship to the other side.
Swanning off ~moving around from place to place, not doing their work
Toein' the line ~ conforming to rules and regulations
Minding your Ps and Q's ~ Sailors were given tabs at the bars starting with pints... once they extended past their tab, they were reminded to "mind (or PAY) yer Ps and Q's" before they were allowed anymore to be placed on a tab,
*Looks like Renee and I had the same idea this morning ;P*
Ahoy dere polywogs!
Well son of a gunner's mate, it'd be a day of celebration wit me mateys. And the first ta decipher this here gibberish will be the owner of me booty!
So, no lollygagging about the scuttlebutt unless ya'd like the taste of me cat o' nine tails come Blue Monday.. or werse, a bit of keel haulin' ta clear yer head ifs I catches ya swanning off! So, ya better be toe'in da line and minding yer P's and Q's if ya knows whats good for ya!
EDITED TO ADD RULES :)
First person to PM me all the underlined words with their TRUE meaning as related to this nautical theme (need to do some research online) will be the winner of the $5 GC! Do NOT post them here unless you want someone else stealing yer booty!! ;P The winner will be announced at 7PM PST/10PM EST tonight!
