On the same night that renowned actor, Arthur Leander, dies of a heart attack on stage while performing as King Lear, a worldwide pandemic finally reaches Toronto. Before the pandemic ends, it will have claimed half the world’s population.

Twenty years later, known as Year Twenty to those who are still keeping track of time, the world is divided into settlements. A nomadic group called the Traveling Symphony, led by a woman named Kirsten who is just old enough to remember the “before time”, wanders around performing Shakespeare and playing music. When the Symphony arrives at the settlement of St. Deborah by the Water where, two years prior, they had left their friends Charlie and Jeremy with their newborn baby, they find that their friends are no longer there. Instead, a despotic “prophet” is now in charge, ruling with fear and violence.

As the timeline moves back and forth between fourteen years prior to the pandemic, the onset of the pandemic, and Year Twenty, we begin to see the ties that bind Arthur, Kirsten, and The Prophet and the strange twist of fate that brings them all together.

OPTION 1: STATION ELEVEN
The novel takes its title from a comic book in the story that one of the characters creates. With that in mind, choose at least two of the following traditional comic book elements to incorporate on your page:
  • Superheroes
  • Panels
  • Speech bubbles
  • Thought bubbles
  • Sound effects

Sample for Option 1

OPTION 2: SETTLEMENTS
There are three main settlements depicted in the book: St. Deborah by the Water, the Severn City Airport, and a farm in what used to be Virginia. Choose one of these settlements and make a page with it as the setting for your photos and layout: (ie: the water, an airport/airplane, or a farm).

Quick question - what do you mean by panels?  I should probably ask my comic book nerd husband...

Sorry about that! Panels are just what the comic book world calls the frames that the page is split into. Like, this comic book page has seven panels:

I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you still have questions!
