Need some support from my Cherry friends - UPDATE

Post by ScrapEgypt »

My 80-year old MIL is in the hospital. She needs surgery for a ruptured hiatal hernia (I think I have that right), but she also has ALS (Lou Gherig's disease). The docs are worried that the surgery might actually kill her because her body would not be able to heal properly because of the ALS. She was only diagnosed with ALS in late Nov, but it seems to be progressing very rapidly. It's so unfair - she has always been so healthy......never smoked, only drank wine occasionally, did Weight Watchers religiously, did water aerobics 2-3 times a week.

We are VERY lucky that she has lots of family members with her helping out. She lives in the same town she grew up in and has sisters, nieces, cousins, etc all very close. But this is when it's hard to live so far away from home.

This is especially hard for DH because he is an only child. He is in London right now for a meeting (I am on my own in Angola), and I am HOPING that he will fly to Pennsylvania at the end of the week to see her. After all, compared to Angola - he's practically there! :)

Anyway - I'm on my own with no one to talk to about this. But I knew I could count on my ACOT friends to give me a little emotional support.

April 1, 2012 - an update

My MIL passed away on March 6, 2012.

Thankfully, after the 3rd hospital trip in 2 weeks, I convinced DH (he is SO stubborn) that he needed to go back. He arrived on a Wed evening and she passed away the following Tuesday. Having gone thru this recently with my beloved step-father, I know it was difficult for him, but I am also SO glad that he was there.

When he realized things were really bad - he asked me to fly back to the US, just so I was close. ( Of course, I realized this about 2 days before he did and was prepared!) I arrived in Houston the morning after she passed. I flew up Thursday, and our sons arrived on Friday and were there for the viewing and the funeral.

DH and spend several days taking care of business and going thru things in the house. I sent him home (well, back to Angola) on Thursday and I stayed until Saturday.....going thru boxes and boxes and boxes. 80% of the stuff was junk, but there were a few treasures to be found (including the photo I scrapped and now have in the gallery).

As an only child (whose father died in 1971), this is all very difficult for him - but his extended family is great. They kept me well supplied (with support, food, and wine) while I went thru the house!

((( Hugs ))) for you and your husband. I'm sure her recent diagnosis with ALS has been hard to deal with and now this? I do hope your dh gets to go see her and I know you wish you could too even to be with him.

Thanks, everyone! I knew I could count on people here.
Have not heard from DH since he called his cousin to get an update on the situation.
Just have to keep fingers crossed!

You have my shoulder should you need an extra one. How awful to be so far away and to feel so helpless. This is in others hands now and hope that whatever the outcome, your mil does not suffer.

You're right. For the most part it is out of our control. The docs want the family to "discuss" the situation, but ultimately - the decision is hers.
Not an easy one to make.

This is just so unfair.
