the aftermath of the 4 wheeler accident
SO when my son flipped the 4 wheeler Wednesday and came home, he could walk on it. it was swollen and he was in some pain. He said he didn't think it was broken. All weekend he iced it, walked on it, complained about it, was off and on his crutches. Today I decide I better take him in, it doesn't look any better. Its broken. In 2 places. I'm thinking WTH how can he walk on it. The Orthopedic surgeon can't get us in until Thursday. Damn!

Oh no! Sorry to hear that Tanya! I am puzzled too. How could he have been able to walk on it w/ it being in broke in 2 pieces?

Oh lordy mae... ou-ch. Good thing you found out when you did, or you might be waiting a lot longer than Thursday! I hope that it doesn't require any surgery!

My mum walked on a broken foot for months before knowing it was broken... bad sprains can actually do more damage, and cause more pain than certain breaks, so yes - it's possible to walk on it and just think it's sprained or something because you can walk...

ouch! Though I agree that breaks sometimes hurt less than sprains and dislocations....plus they heal faster in most cases!

Re: the aftermath of the 4 wheeler accident
Not getting in to the orthopedic surgeon before Thursday isn't a big deal...they often wait that long even if you'd known earlier because they have to wait for the swelling to go down before they cast. Even if it needs surgery, often they have to wait for some swelling to subside so it will heal better. And as someone already mentioned, it is not uncommon for a break to go undetected, even if it is xrayed at the time of injury...breaks can often be hidden! Hope he feels better soon!

You are lucky. Please be VERY careful with 4 wheelers: November 5th will be the first anniversary of the death of one of my DD's soccer friends due to a four wheeler accident. She was only 15. It was a "simple" accident that turned deadly.

Re: the aftermath of the 4 wheeler accident
That's a great warning Becky. My cousin was killed on a 3 wheeler when she was 8. So sad. I usually don't like my kids or dh on motorcycles ect.
Thankfully he only broke his ankle. My husband told me what happened because he was right there. They were moving cows. He hit a dip in the road and it rolled over. He was going slow. It was a gator, the ones with a top. He was lucky he didn't get any other injuries

A broken leg and no ortho will see him til Thursday? That's crazy.

4 wheelers have been banned from our house since my now 20 y/o daughter's accident 5 years ago- flipped it and the handle bar went 6" INTO her leg- had to be careflighted to the nearest trauma hospital, emergency surgery etc. They are VERY dangerous and I will not allow them any longer. I didn't want them to begin with, my husband insisted, but everyone I know has a story of someone getting killed on one, they should not exist.

1 year ago dh flipped a quad in utah on a Saturday. On the next Tuesday we went to the Dr. after he wailked on it for the weekend. He had a broken bone in his leg and also ended up with nerve damage in his foot. Those things can be so dangerous.
