I don't love it, but I don't hate it. Oh and it is nice that I have flexible hours - for the first year I got in at about 6am and left around 4, but now I am getting into work around 9:30 and leaving around 6:30. I want to try to change that though and get up earlier. Oh and I wear jeans to work every day, it's really casual.

I used to do computer programming in my past life on the mainframe. They were just switching to more computer based when I left to have Emily. Do you have to do support too? That was the worst part of my job - the 2am calls about something being broken.

no thank god I don't have to do support. I would hate that!

I'm a chemistry professor. I specialize in chemistry education (the training of future teachers at all grades K-12 and professional development of middle school and high school teachers), forensic chemistry education, women in science, and laboratory instruction. I'm at a primarily undergraduate institution but I do have some masters students in forensics that work with me. I'm the chemistry club advisor and I just got a grant that will fund a science night for the community and summer science camps for disadvantaged children in the area. It's a stressful, rewarding, challenging job. And, I never wanted to do anything else.

I'm also a mom and the youngest just ran downstairs naked so I better go find out what is going on.

I'm a computer programmer - I have flexible hours, but mostly a 7:30 to 4 type day. My kids are grown, but still in college, my hubby works shift so my work days are usually scheduled around someone elses day/activities!

Re: Jobs?
Great thread!

I am a Computer Engineer for a local telecomm company here in Puerto Rico. I specialize in IBM Application Servers, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Databases, as well as providing support to several other middleware applications and services. I am on-call 24x7, sometimes I have to works nights and weekends... oh, and have to take my laptop when I go on vacation... :?

On the weekends I do the bookkeeping for our automobile repair/bodyshop. We have no kids other than our pets, our 11 yr old Basset Hound, Timi, and our 10 yr old stray cat, Sisi. We got married in March 2010 after living together for almost 3 years. DH is an only child, but I am the oldest of 5, so most weekends we have my niece and my baby brother (he's 11) running around in the pool!

I hear you girls! I do support... flex hours, but those 3 am calls are horrible! One time I was on vacation, and sitting in front of the ocean, in the sand, with my laptop connected wirelessly... working! But I love my job. It pays well and I get to come and go as I please. Remember that things are NOT broken most of the time!

Re: Jobs?
I work full-time as an auditor for the parking contractor at our local airport (the company I work for is contracted through the State of Maryland). My hours are 8:30 to 4:30 Tuesday thru Saturday and the holidays I have off are Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. Our contract is up in January of next year but the company does have a bid on the new contract (keeping my fingers crossed that we get the new contract or that I get picked with the new company. I do volunteer with the school to do stuff at home as needed. I also clean the office my BF works in once a week. Plus I am currently looking into possibly becoming an Ippity stamp representative.

Re: Jobs?
This has been an interesting thread to read.

I work for a regional insurance (a 'little' but growing larger) company as an Underwriting Technician in the Commercial Habitational Division. Basically I do data entry and work with the underwritring staff to get all the proper information for new business applications.

I made the change from the Personal Lines Policies about 2.5 years ago. n the Personal lines policies I did New business policy data entry and customer service (gosh I don't miss that phone line and the tethered phone cord).

Prior to this company ( 13+ years back) I worked for the "BIG" insurance company in Life & Health doing billing/banking & customer service.

I am currently a Self Study student taking classes in the insurace tract. Having recently completed my Certificate of Insurance and currently working towards my Associates in Insurance Services.

Re: Jobs?
What a great thread!
Well, before I started my own home daycare two years ago, I worked for a national inventory service company that did inventories for retail companies. I had been there for 20 yrs. Yeah, I started back when I was in highschool. It was a great part time job. I tried college, but really didn't want to do want my dad wanted to so I quit. Worked several retail places over the years. Most favorite was The Disney Store. At one point in my life I actually had a "real" 8-4 job working in the accounting department of a property management company. Once I had my first child, I knew that life was over. I have never looked back! So I have been a SAHM with part time jobs over the last 12 yrs. Decided that none of those part time retail jobs was giving me what I wanted most, time with my kids. When my neighbor said "why don't you try home childcare?" I said " sure if you are". So we work together with another neighbor during mornings rotating between each others houses. We do our own version of preschool for the kids. Some days I can't stand being home all the time, but then I really wouldn't change what I have. Now my baby is starting K this year, so it will be different watching others kids without one of my own here with me. Not sure how I am going to handle that. :( I would like to someday go back to school and maybe get a teaching degree of something. Until then, I will just stay home!

My title is "Telecommunications Specialist." Basically I handle the voice mail system where I work, share the responsibilities for the voice menus (yep, get to record them... "for so and so, please press 1"), help with telephone billing, do the work that no one else in the office wants to do, and I'm back up for several people in our office. Fun, fun, fun....

Seriously? This is a fun thread!!

I work full-time at an Autism Center. Senior Administrative Assistant. Love my job - I used to own a scrapbook store which was REALLY fun but with the bad economy I closed a couple years ago. I still teach some classes and sell stamps.

This has been a fun thread!

I'm a stay at home mom now, and have been for about a year and a half. Before that, I spent 10 years or so in Human Resources in several local companies. Apparently I'm a glutton for punishment, because I'm headed back to school to get into programming, even though I have two degrees already. I'm glad to see some programmers on here, 'cause I may need some tutoring!!!

My biggest worry is when I'll find the time to scrap!?!?!?!?
