I have a friend thats into geocaching. Im not sure what it is. They go out every weekend and do this. I think its like finding buried treasure or something and they use their Gps system- I think. Has anyone heard of this and are they into this? Im assuming since they do this all the time it must be fun I guess.
I read about this nearly 6 months back or so. I think it might have been on this board! It was the first time I'd heard of it. Not really familiar with it. Who has time?? LOL!
Heidi (wahoo_mom) and her boys have done it several times. That's about as much as I know about it.

I think SarahA does this. I don't know what it is either. Hopefully she'll be on soon.

I heard about it a couple years ago.

DH and I have done this. Basically you can go to websites to find coordinates for your GPS (and oftentimes there are clues and scavenger hunt type tips) and you head out to places all over the world where folks have hidden boxes. Inside the box is usually a small notebook for recording that you were there and sometimes some trinkets for "trading". I have seen little toys (great if you do it with kids), stamps, pens, etc. Nothing of value and you don't have to bring/take anything. The fun is in the walk/hike to find the hidden box. They can be in trees, in stumps, or tucked away anywhere safe (but not in the ground). It is way fun and like a treasure hunt every time! Geocaching is a worldwide activity!
Oh, it is fun! We haven't done it in quite awhile and I miss it! My first layout I posted here was us Geocaching!
You can go to geocaching.com to find out more- that's the official site where you get the coordinates. Our team name is Sweet & Sour!

Yes, I heard about it a few years ago. There are websites with lists of places where little "treasures or notes or sign in sheets are stashed". I think their motto is.."It's the journey, not the destination". Anyways....my friends have two little girls, and they looked up some places before they went on vacation and had a little hunt while they were vacationing. It was a great way to fill in some time. And it was neat for them to discover the area a little more.
I just got a GPS for christmas. I haven't gone geocaching yet...but my friend Rob and I plan to do it in the summer. Should be lots of fun.

Don't fear the challenge, challenge the fear.

My SIL (montanagirl) and her BF do it ALOT! She even has a Geocaching SB album!
This is loads of fun! I loved doing it when we went on vacation with friends. I even did a LO of it.
Its great for kids, they get out and walk, look, experiance nature. My kids loved it! And finding the treasures, you pick one that is there, and put one in to leave. You record that you were there in the notebook that is there (or the paper) and then if you ever come back to it, you can find your name. People come from all over the world to do it. and its cool to see.

We have done it a lot! In a couple months it will be time to do it again!
I went to the website. It looks like it would be a great family activity. I'll have to bring it up to dh. Sounds like a lot of fun!
We first learned about this on a scrapbooking website and then there was a huge exhibit on it at the Pink Palace museum in Memphis that peaked my DS#2s's interest. DH brought home a mobile GPS from work and we've now done this 4 or 5 times. We've loved doing it and think this spring we will hide our own treasure up here on our mountain. It will be fun to watch people come to find it.
It's a great way to get back in touch with nature and also learn about math/science without trying too hard.

Yes, Sarah A. does it!
I loved it. When we lived in TX my mom and I did it all the time. I haven't done it since I moved to CA. I miss it!!! If you like finding things and running all over the city you should try it. We did use way too much gas doing it though.
